Maintenance
Services
While we can never be prepared for every
attack on IT resources, it is a fact that most attacks take
advantage of long-known vulnerabilities in computer systems.
Watchdog organizations are constantly uncovering
weaknesses in operating systems, networks, and applications.
When a weakness is uncovered, it is usually published for
everyone to see. While this is good in letting people
know to patch their systems, it also provides a blueprint
that a malicious person can use to construct an attack.
Read the Slammer
Worm Case Study for a perfect example.
In post-attack reports, system administrators
have two common conclusions:
- If patches were applied when released,
attacks such as Slammer would have far less effect.
- Proper management of network security would reduce
the effects of non-patched systems.
Your Responsibility & Liability
The most important concern for organizations
now, is the growing trend for holding companies responsible
for having unpatched systems. At the CyberCrime
2003 Conference & Exhibition, this topic was discussed
by Marc Zwillinger, chair of the Information Security and
Anti-Piracy Practice Group at the law firm of Sonnenschein
Nath & Rosenthal. For more information on the
conference and speaker, see the Cybercrime
2003 Home Page.
